About Our Farm
The Farm
Sprouting Acres Organic Farm is a produce, pizza, and event farm located in beautiful Cambridge, Wisconsin, just 30 minutes from downtown Madison. We use organic and sustainable farming practices to care for the land and resources, ensuring that only the highest quality products reach our customers. Stewardship of the farm means not only caring for the land, but also cultivating community and providing a living wage for our farmers and staff.
We practice sustainable farming techniques by utilizing integrated pest management, organic soil amendments, cover crops, crop rotation plans, and efficient water usage. We have been USDA Certified Organic since 2009. We are happy to talk about our growing practices with you if you have more questions!
Community and family is at the heart of Sprouting Acres Organic Farm. In a world where our interactions with food have evolved to be more convenient and less personal, our vision is to create a thriving, active community around our farm: connecting people with people, with nourishing food, and with the patterns of the changing seasons. We want to impact the way our community cooks and eats both at home and on the farm!
Our Values
We’re a values-driven business, and people are the heart of our farm and work.
At Sprouting Acres, we celebrate diversity, consider the care of our crew, community, and family to be one of our greatest responsibilities. We are continuously working to create a safe and inclusive workplace, and to provide fair wages for our staff.
While prioritizing staff may not seem revolutionary, agriculture in the US is deeply rooted in slavery and exploitation, and present-day labor is still typically the most undervalued component of our food system. We feel that focusing on our staff at the farm is an important way that we can contribute to changing this dynamic.
Taking care of our earth and land is another one of our top priorities. We respectfully acknowledge that we are working on the traditional lands of the Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo), Peoria, Sauk and Meskwaki, Myaamia, Hoocąk (Ho-Chunk), and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ peoples who have cared for this land for generations before the land was seized from them. Stewardship and environmental responsibility includes understanding the past and recognizing our privilege.
We recognize that food access is a human right and a powerful tool for social justice and equality. We acknowledge that in order to act on our values (care for staff, the environment, and serve our community) our products won’t be affordable for everyone and we are working to address this where we are able.
We welcome feedback as we continue to learn and turn words into meaningful action.
Your Farmer
Andy Watson was born and raised on the farm. His passion for farming began in high school when he started growing produce for the Clay Market Cafe, where he worked, which was located in downtown Cambridge. Andy went on to pursue a college degree in food systems management and spent more than a decade working at some of the finest restaurants in Madison such as Opera House, Harvest, and Papavero. As local foods were brought into the restaurant, it spurred a renewed interest in farming and led to him founding Sprouting Acres in 2001. Andy also continued his love of cooking by teaching cooking classes at a former Stoughton locale, All Through the House for several years. In 2017, we started to plan for a way to blend his love of cooking and growing local organic food by dreaming up Pizza Nights and events on the farm. It was a labor of love to build the new barn with a commercial kitchen, the wood-fired pizza ovens, stage and more. Andy is extremely handy and resourceful so most of what you see on the farm has been built by Andy himself. From the day-to-day manual work of harvesting and weeding to the mouthwatering kitchen creations, Andy is the heart and soul of the farm and loves it all.
